A torque tube system is a power transmission and braking technology, that involves a stationary housing around the drive shaft, often used in automobiles with a front engine and rear drive, and rear brakes (with or without front brakes, which play no part in it).The torque tube consists of a large diameter stationary housing between the transmission and rear end that fully encloses a rotating ...
Torque tube Drive . A torque tube system is a driveshaft technology, often used in automobiles with a front engine and rear drive. It is not as widespread as the Hotchkiss drive, but is still occasionally used to this day. Drive shafts are sometimes also used for other vehicles and machinery.
When the torque tube is in position such that the front flange is near the clutch housing, rotate the torque tube back to its normal orientation (if it's a torque tube with dog ears). Then move the torque tube forward until the drive shaft slides into the pressure plate and clutch disc and the torque tube flange is flush with the clutch housing.
Check the torque tube drive shaft bushing for wear. This bushing is located at the front of the torque tube where the rear yoke slides into the tube. The bushing can be checked, after the U joint is removed, by grasping the drive shaft at the spline end and move it up and down within the tube.
More About Torque Tubes & Torque Balls Pit Stop USA is The Online Motorsports Superstore! Pit Stop USA stocks Sprint Car Torque Tubes, Sprint Car Torque Balls and more.
Disconnect the torque tube from the transmission. Be sure to support the tube with a floor jack because there is a lot of downward pressure on the tube. Disassemble the U joint and drop the torque tube down below the transmission. Remove the U joint and slide the ball housing off of the tube.

The C5 driveshaft is encased inside an aluminum torque tube. The torque tube is attached to the engine bellhousing in the front and to the transmission case in the rear. The driveshaft is held in place by bearings inside the torque tube. In 2001, a stronger driveshaft was put into all C5s to cope with the higher performance of the Z06.
